Located in the heart of the greater region of the Centre-East of Tunisia, the Governorate of Mahdia is opening onto the eastern basin of the Mediterranean with a coastline of more than 75 km in length, bordered to the north by the governorates of Sousse and Monastir, to the west by the governorate of Kairouan and to the south by the governorate of Sfax. It covers an area of 2878 square kilometers that is mean 1.9% of Tunisia's surface area.
